A day out in Grenoble

A surprisingly colourful city surrounded by mountains, Grenoble is a magnet for visitors with its museums, dynamic historic centre and nearby nature activities. Here are three ideas for spending a day in Grenoble!

Three must-sees in Grenoble

The Grenoble Museum

This art museum is one of the city's major cultural sites. It houses an impressive range of works of art from the 13th to the 20th century:
  • Ancient art, with paintings by Paul Gauguin and Georges De La Tour
  • Modern art, with works by Pablo Picasso, Henri Matisse and Marc Chagall
  • Contemporary art: thanks to this collection, the Musée de Grenoble can claim to be one of Europe's leading museums of contemporary art.
  • Graphic arts: a collection of old drawings and preparatory drawings
A special feature of the Musée de Grenoble is its extensive collection of Egyptian antiquities.

Champs-Élysées park

Grenoble's green lung, the Champs-Élysées park offers 12 hectares of nature in the heart of the city, along the Drac. The park's vast pond is a particular favourite, providing a bucolic atmosphere. Popular with families, the park has play areas for children and a picnic area with views of the mountains.

Notre-Dame de Grenoble cathedral

Built from the 10th century onwards, Grenoble cathedral is nicknamed "the city of the bishop". In fact, it is one of the rare examples in France of a complete cathedral group with bell tower-porch, parish church (11th century), cathedral (13th century) and cloister. The cathedral's interior is packed with treasures, including monumental paintings, a carved wooden pulpit and a double tabernacle.
