Discovering Fort de Saint-Gobain

Discover a 20th-century infantry structure

Also known as the Saint-Gobain fort, this is a must-see for anyone interested in military works visiting our hotel in Saint-Jean-de-Maurienne.

The history of the Saint-Gobain fort

Built in the early 1930s, the fort was designed to protect two strategic points linking France and Italy: Route Nationale 6 and the Modame railway line.

Thanks to its location on the Maginot Line, the infantry fort had a role to play in the Second World War.

Built in the late 1920s, this line was made up of military defences along the borders with Germany.

How to visit Fort Saint-Gobain

The fort is now open to anyone interested in learning more about its history.

During the summer months, an association offers you the chance to enter this historic structure via a signposted route and explanatory panels.
